The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Brick and mortar are porous. They soak up water from rain and from the air, and when that water freezes it can crack the brick from the inside. A chimney, which is exposed on all sides, is hit harder than most walls.

We protect chimneys in Nashville and across Middle Tennessee from the top down. The work starts by fixing the leaks, which means the crown, the cap, the flashing and the mortar joints, and then we apply a breathable repellent that keeps liquid water out while letting vapor escape.

Why owners choose it

Four things done right.

The leaks fixed first

A repellent cannot fix a cracked crown or a failed flashing, so we repair those first.

A product that breathes

A vapor-permeable repellent lets moisture out and keeps liquid water out.

No shiny coatings

We avoid film-forming sealers that can trap moisture and make brick spall.

Tested on a small spot

We check the product on a small area so you see the result first.

How it goes

From first call to chimney waterproofing.

  1. 01

    Inspect the chimney

We look at the brick, mortar, crown, cap, flashing and any stains.

  2. 02

    Repair first

Cracks, joints and flashing are repaired so the repellent has a sound surface.

  3. 03

    Apply the repellent

The brick is cleaned and treated with a breathable product.

  4. 04

    Check and advise

We review the work and explain how long a repellent usually lasts.

Good questions

Chimney Waterproofing: common questions

Will waterproofing stop a chimney leak?

Only if the leak is coming through the brick. Most chimney leaks come through the crown, the cap or the flashing, and those need repair, not a coating.

Is a clear sealer safe for brick?

A breathable repellent is. A thick, shiny film-forming sealer can trap moisture behind it and damage the brick, so we avoid those.
