The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Concrete masonry units, or CMU, are the workhorse of the building trades. They make strong, fire-resistant walls for foundations, garages, shops, retaining walls and the back-up walls behind brick and stone.

We build block walls for homes and businesses in Nashville and across Middle Tennessee. The work includes layout, reinforcing steel, grouted cores where the plan needs them, bond beams, lintels and a finish that can be left as block, stuccoed, painted or faced with brick or stone.

Why owners choose it

Four things done right.

Laid to the line

String lines and levels keep every course level and every corner plumb.

Reinforced as designed

Steel and grout go where the plan says, and the cores are filled properly.

Built for water

Flashing, waterproofing and drainage are part of the wall, not an afterthought.

A finish for the job

The wall can stay raw, be parged or be faced to look like brick or stone.

Good questions

Block and CMU Walls: common questions

What is the difference between CMU and brick?

Brick is a small clay unit used for faces and walls. CMU is a larger concrete block, usually used for structure. Many buildings use block for the structure and brick or stone for the face.

Do block walls need to be filled?

Reinforced block walls are filled with grout in the cores that hold steel, as the plan specifies. Not every core is filled, and the plan shows which ones.
