What it is, and why it matters.
A brick or stone patio is the floor of an outdoor room. The pattern, the color and the edge detail set the mood, and a good base underneath keeps it level and quiet for years. Cheap work heaves in winter and sinks around drains.
We build brick and natural stone patios for homes in Nashville and across Middle Tennessee, from small cafe-style spaces to large entertaining terraces. We set them dry on a compacted base or mortared on a concrete slab, with drainage planned from the start.
Four things done right.
A base built to last
Excavation, compacted stone and a bedding layer keep the surface flat.
A pattern with purpose
Herringbone resists shifting, while running bond and basket weave give other looks.
Edges that lock it in
A restraint edge holds the field of brick or stone from spreading.
Drainage planned
A slope of about a quarter inch per foot sends water away from the house.

Brick and Stone Patios: common questions
Is a brick patio hard to maintain?
Not very. An annual sweep, a rinse and a look at the joints is usually enough. Some owners reseal every few years to keep color and fight stains.
Can you build a patio over my old concrete slab?
Sometimes. If the slab is sound, stone or brick can be mortared over it. If it is cracked or sloped the wrong way, removing it and building a new base is often better.
