The craft

Masonry is slow on purpose, and that is why it lasts.

A good wall is the sum of small, careful decisions: a footing that does not move, a string line pulled tight, a joint tooled while the mortar is just right, flashing that sends water where it belongs. From a brick bungalow in Nashville to a stone entry in Franklin, we build and repair masonry the old-fashioned way, with modern materials and a written plan.

  • Footings and drainage planned before the first brick
  • Brick, stone and mortar matched with test samples
  • Clear written options and a price before work begins

The Brick Dictionary

Six bricks, defined.

Color, texture and character start with the clay. Here is a quick field guide to the brick families we lay most, and where each one looks best.

A closeup of traditional red clay bricks aligned in courses with light gray mortar joints
01 · brick

Common red n.

The classic. Iron-rich clay fired until it turns a warm, familiar red. It pairs with nearly any mortar and suits traditional and modern homes alike.

Best for: Homes, chimneys, walls, patios
A closeup of dark brown textured bricks in horizontal courses with light gray mortar joints
02 · brick

Umber n.

Deeper brown tones from the clay and the firing. Rich and earthy, good at hiding soot and dirt, and a natural partner for stone accents.

Best for: Fireplaces, entries, accent walls
A closeup of light tan buff bricks in standard courses with textured mortar joints
03 · brick

Buff n.

Lighter-burning clay fires to cream and tan. It gives a soft, sunny look and works well with warm mortar.

Best for: Additions, porches, sunny elevations
A closeup of charcoal gray textured bricks in neat rows separated by pale mortar lines
04 · brick

Charcoal n.

A modern, moody gray. Pale mortar draws the pattern out, and dark mortar makes the wall read as one smooth surface.

Best for: Modern homes, feature walls
A closeup of whitewashed brick showing faded red tones through the textured white finish
05 · brick

Whitewash n.

A limewashed or mineral-painted finish that brightens a wall and still shows the texture. A breathable coating lets moisture escape.

Best for: Interiors, porches, cottages
A closeup of weathered, rustic tumbled bricks with softened edges and rough mortar joints
06 · brick

Tumbled adj.

Brick tumbled before it is sold, so edges are soft and surfaces look worn. It looks aged from day one and suits old neighborhoods and garden walls.

Best for: Garden walls, patios, older homes

        Before you call

        Questions, answered

What masonry services do you offer?

We build and repair brick, stone and block: custom brickwork and veneer, natural stone, chimneys and fireplaces, retaining and garden walls, outdoor fireplaces and kitchens, patios, pavers and concrete, repointing and restoration, plus commercial and HOA work. Every service has its own page.

        Are your estimates free?

Yes. Estimates are free and come in writing with the scope, the materials, the options and the price. Fill in the form on any page, or call or text 615-431-3789, and we will set up a visit or review your photos.

How much does a brick, stone or paver project cost?

It depends on the size, the materials, the base or footing, access and the details. Our Cost Estimator shows planning ranges by project and extras, and a visit turns the range into a written price.

How long does a typical project take?

A mailbox or a small repair can be done in a day or two. A patio, a chimney rebuild or a retaining wall often takes several days to a couple of weeks, and a large addition or outdoor kitchen can take longer. You get the schedule before work starts.

What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?

Both replace failed mortar. Repointing is the general term. Tuckpointing traditionally means filling joints with a matching mortar and adding a thin contrasting line, though many people use the words for the same service.

How do I know if my chimney needs repair?

Look for crumbling mortar, loose or flaking brick, a cracked crown, a missing cap, rust or stains at the flashing and water stains inside near the chimney. A close look from the roof shows the real condition.

Should I repair or rebuild a damaged wall?

Small problems like a few loose bricks or worn joints are usually repaired. If the brick is crumbling across the wall, or the wall is leaning, rebuilding may be the better value. Our Repair Advisor gives a first opinion, and a visit confirms it.

Can you match the brick on my house?

Often we can get close. Brick weathers over the years, so we bring samples to the wall, compare them in daylight and match the mortar color, texture and strength, too.
